Our Story
The light starts to shine…
The torn, rag-dolled ball floated to my feet. 'Surely not' I thought, 'surely this isn't the ball!' As the kids ran towards me I was in two minds - show off my seemingly talented football skills with a Ronaldo flick pass or pick up the half ball-half rag off the dry, dehydrated ground and replace it with my ball. An actual football.
As their eyes stared at the new ball in disbelief, I knew this was a life changing moment for me. How could I take it to the next level and give each child a ball? And then, when that ball goes flat, how could I give each of them a pump?
This was my introduction to a vibrant, warm, rural island community in Vanuatu. It was also my introduction to a cause beyond myself. Like all great things, Schools of Light began as a seed. This story was just that, a seed.
Education is one of the few things that has proven to have a truly transformative impact on people’s lives. It helps them to realise their true potential, reduces inequality, and, over time, builds fair and equitable societies.
As a teacher who has witnessed the true super power of school communities, I know that education is the best possible pathway for change.
Schools of Light partners with school communities and local NGOs to have greater impact. Helping them own their own future, because we realise that the school community is a light. It can sustain, give hope for tomorrow, care for urgent needs, and truly lift families out of poverty.
